Brussels, 30/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - Leader of the Egyptian Parliament Fathi Sourour, who is also a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) has accused Israel of being responsible for the adoption, on 17 January, of a European Parliament resolution critical of the human rights situation in Egypt. Sourour, quoted by Al-Ahram of 23 January, says that the text is “worthless” and “contains lies”. It could, however, compromise EU relations with the Arab world. The text of a resolution of the Arab Parliament is circulating in Brussels. It “rejects” what was adopted in Strasbourg and calls on the European Parliament to review its position, which is not helpful to Euro-Egyptian and, more generally, to Euro-Arab relations. According to Al-Ahram, Sourour even threatened “all those who provide the European Parliament with false information” saying they could be charged with “supreme treason” and “acting with a foreign power”. This is a coded message to the Egyptian opposition, who are regularly consulted by MEPs. (F.B.)
