15/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - The ad hoc working group on the EU's climate change policy and the Christian lifestyle, set up by the Commission of the Bishops' Conference of the European Community (COMECE), met for the first time on 11 January in Brussels, a COMECE press release states. The group, chaired by Franz Fischler, former European Agriculture Commissioner, is composed of 10 well-known European figures from the scientific and political worlds. It is responsible for giving COMECE episcopates a view of the EU's role in combating climate change, identifying the possible impact that this will have on the daily lives of EU citizens, and assessing from a Christian viewpoint the opportunities that may emerge from a lifestyle that is different and more respectful of the climate. The group will hand in its report this autumn. (L.B.S.)
