15/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 11 January, the European Commission adopted a new regulation setting out measures for the implementation of common aviation safety rules. The regulation entering into force on 1 February 2008 establishes Threat Image Projection (TPI) performance requirements. This system consists of projecting virtual images of threat articles into an x-ray image of a bag and was devised as a means of increasing the vigilance of screeners in charge of examining cabin baggage and cargo. According to the new regulation (published in Official Journal L9 12 January), TIP criteria should be examined at least every two years in an effort to check their adaptation to technical developments. The Commission also believes it necessary to set a minimum and maximum percentage for virtual images of dangerous articles projected into the images of bags that have been examined. The regulation will also be demanding a regular update in the library of virtual images used for TIP. (A.By.)
