Elmar Brok lambasts American interference in debate on Turkey - “Washington has not understood European project”

Brussels, 10/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - German MEP and EPP-ED group coordinator on foreign policy issues, Elmar Brok (CDU) has sharply refuted the comments of American President George W. Bush, who, on 8 January, repeated his support for the accession of Turkey to the EU (see EUROPE 9576). “US President Bush should refrain from getting involved in discussions on EU enlargement,” Brok said in a press release. American interference in the debate on Turkey is as inappropriate as if “the EU were to demand that the US granted Puerto Rico the sale rights as all other American States enjoy,” went on the former chairman of the European Parliament foreign affairs committee, who does not hide his opposition to Turkey's full accession to the EU. How can the United States ask the EU to grant Turkish citizens full freedom of movement in the Union when, at this very moment, the US is building a security fence against immigrants along its border with Mexico, he ponders. Brok, the European Parliament rapporteur on enlargement strategy concluded with the biting statement that “The US government has still not understood the political project of the European Union”.
