Brussels, 09/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On 21 December, the European Commission adopted a proposal to update the common market organisation (CMO) regulation of 2007 in the agricultural sector (“single CMO regulation” merging the current CMO regulations into a single text, EUROPE 9443). This will involve integrating important amendments into this regulation that were recently adopted by the Council in the sugar, fruit and vegetable, fruit and processed fruit, seed, beef meat and milk and milk product sectors. These changes in the common agricultural policy (CAP) followed the adoption of the single CMO regulation.
The Commission explained that in connection with the CMO of sugar, seed and milk and milk products, the single CMO regulation already provides a new legal framework and will abrogate specific existing CMO regulations in certain sectors when the single CMO regulation is applied in each of these sectors, namely, from 1 July 2008 for seed and milk and milk products and from 1 October 2008 for sugar. In the fruit and vegetable and fruit and processed vegetable sectors, current CMO regulations will be totally integrated into the single CMO regulation. The CMO has already been totally integrated into the single CMO regulation for the beef meat sector (only new rules on marketing have to be added now). (L.C.)
