Brussels, 04/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - Louis Michel, European Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, has reiterated his concern for the safety of humanitarian aid workers following recent events in Burundi and Somalia. In a press release, he strongly condemns the assassination of a member of Action Contre la Faim who was shot dead in Burundi at the end of 2007, and the wounding of another person from the same organisation. Mr Michel addresses his condolences to the families of the victims.
“There was more positive news from Somalia where two aid workers from Médecins Sans Frontières were released after a week in captivity. Both incidents, however, highlight the hazardous conditions facing relief organisations as they strive to help the world's most vulnerable people”, the Commissioner stressed, pointing out that the attacks and kidnappings had a direct effect on the delivery of humanitarian aid.
