Brussels, 04/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - On the margins of the Energy Council in Brussels on Monday 3 December, coordinator Mario Monti informed European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs of his first conclusions on the electricity interconnection plan between France and Spain. Following a working meeting, attended by the Spanish and French ministers with responsibility for energy issues, Joan Clos and Jean-Louis Borloo respectively, devoted to the upcoming Franco-Spanish summit, Monti said that, although the plan was very complex, he had noted a “positive dynamic” at the political level. The former European commissioner said he was confident of the willingness of Madrid and Paris to work towards finding a solution that satisfied all parties concerned, including groups opposed to the plan (see EUROPE 9536). Having met Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero at the end of November, Monti will meet the French head of government François Fillon in the next few days before submitting a first interim report on precisely where the plan stands and on his proposals.
