THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/russia

03/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - Following last weekend's parliamentary elections in Russia, which gave a landslide (more than 64% of the still provisional election results) to “United Russia”, the political party of Vladimir Putin, the European Commission is currently examining allegations of irregularities expressed by OSCE and Council of Europe observers, which described the vote as “uneven”. According to these observers, the election campaign and vote itself took place in a “climate that seriously limited political competition”. The Commission is aware of these allegations and is examining them through its “different sources”, before officially responding to the election results, explained the Commission spokesperson on Monday 3 December.
