03/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - Although the DVB-H standard appears to have sufficient potential for becoming the standard norm for mobile televisions in the European Union, as sought by the European Commission, ministers from member states, did, however, explain in their conclusions on Thursday that this norm should not become the only standard or become compulsory (EUROPE 9554). The Commission believes that once the DVB-H standard is on the European list in February, it will, nonetheless, become the “de facto” common standard for the whole of the EU and naturally supersede the other formats. Commissioner Viviane Reding was delighted that most member states supported her proposal but she did not succeed in convincing the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands. These member states will, nevertheless, require a two thirds majority among the EU27, if the Commission decision is to fail. (I.L.)
