10/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - The security committee for the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is expected to reach a decision at its 83rd session on 2-13 October in Copenhagen on implementation of the Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system for the global identification and tracking of ships. The US delegation proposed that the role of managing such a mechanism was up to the US. If this is the case, the US would be responsible for the construction, hosting and management of the centre, as well as for the data sent out from regional data centres, such as the EU's regional LRIT centre (there was a decision to set it up made at the Transport Council) (EUROPE 9514).
