Three films vying for Lux Prize

Brussels, 05/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 24 October 2007 the European Parliament will be awarding the Lux Prize to the European film with the most obvious European dimension. The prize was set up by the European Parliament to encourage the distribution of European cinema. The winning prize will receive financial backing to enable it to be sub-titled in all 23 official EU languages and therefore be easier to distribute in the EU. The film in the original language will be adapted to be more accessible to hard-of-hearing and partially sighted people. Three of the 800 European films made between May 2006 and May 2007 were selected by a professional jury as most clearly representing the universality of European values and the cultural diversity in the EU and best able to encourage debate about the EU project. The shortlisted films are '4 luni, 3 setamani, 2 zile' by Romanian Cristian Mungiu, 'Auf der anderen Seite' by German Faith Akin and 'Belle toujours' by Portuguese director Manuel de Oliveria. The 785 MEPs will be able to watch all three films from 1-18 October and choose the winner. The winning film will be officially announced in plenary on 24 October by Hans-Gert Pottering. In a press release, the European Parliament says that building Europe also means arguing for a diversity of cultures and supporting creative industries. (il)
