Appointment of new Anti-terrorism tsar imminent

Brussels, 17/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is in the process of appointing a new European Anti-Terrorism Coordinator. There is a “very strong likelihood” that the name of the new coordinator will be revealed on 18 September, when the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council meets, a diplomatic source told EUROPE. If this were not to be the case, the appointment is likely to be made during the course of the week, according to the same source. At any rate, things have considerably speeded up. On Monday 17 September, Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU met Portuguese Interior Minister Rui Pereira to find a consensus on the future remit and a possible name for the European coordinator, a post which has been vacant since the departure of Dutchman Gijs de Vries in March. The Portuguese presidency is expected to discuss the various options on the table at an informal dinner of EU home affairs ministers. Mr Solana, whose responsibility it is to name the future coordinator, also planned to meet French and German Interior Ministers Michèle Alliot-Marie and Wolfgang Schäuble and UK Justice Minister Jack Straw to get the agreement of the major capitals. At the start of September, the majority of MEPs called for the swift appointment of a new European Coordinator. The presidency formally undertook to do this (see EUROPE 9495). (bc)
