Brussels, 12/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 12 September, in line with the wishes of the European Council of March 2007 (2007-2009 Action Plan for the Energy Policy for Europe, EUROPE 9383), the European Commission appointed the coordinators whose task it will be to monitor and facilitate the implementation of four priority projects. The period of appointment is four years. Head of Milan's Bocconi University and former European Commissioner Mario Monti will be responsible for the high voltage connection between France and Spain. Former German Federal Economy Minister Georg Wilhelm Adamowitsch will oversee the completion of the off-shore wind connections in the Baltic and North Sea areas (Denmark-Germany-Poland). Former Dutch Foreign Minister Jozias Johannes van Aartsen will deal with the NABUCCO gas connection project between Turkey and Austria through Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary to facilitate gas supply to the EU from Central Asia. Professor Wladyslaw Mielczarski at the University of Lodz will be in charge of the power connection between Germany, Poland and Lithuania. The task of the coordinators is to offer strategic support as well as to provide practical advice to the projects which, in the face of technical, political and financial difficulties, are in need of some momentum. The appointment of the coordinators was decided by the Council on the basis of the Priority Interconnection Plan adopted by the Commission on 10 January as part of the “energy and climate” package (see EUROPE 9431).
