Brussels, 06/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - In November, the European Union will bring together the ministers and experts of the EU and partner countries of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia, Latin America and the United States for an indepth discussion on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and proliferation. The two-day symposium, prepared by the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, will be opened by EU High Representative for CFSP Javier Solana on Tuesday 13 November 2007. It will be attended by numerous well-known personalities. Ministers will be succeeded by experts on 14 November. Invitations were being launched on Monday 3 September as preparatory work was still in progress. Entitled “Addressing strategic challenges together”, the conference will comprise two sections on upholding the multilateral non-proliferation and disarmament treaty system, and building trust in order to cooperate in modern technological fields including energy, explained Cristina Gallach. The spokeswoman for the EU foreign policy chief mainly stressed how important it was to restore confidence, pointing out that the EU firmly believes in a multilateral system to manage non-proliferation mechanisms.
