Khartoum deports EU and Canadian diplomats

Brussels, 24/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, Sudan ordered the expulsion of the head of the European Commission delegation in Khartoum, Kent Degerfelt (currently on holiday in Italy), and Canada's representative in Sudan. The Sudanese foreign ministry said that both diplomats had been declared persona non grata because of their interference in Sudan's domestic affairs. Questioned by reporters about the expulsion on Friday, a European Commission spokesperson, Antonia Mochan, would only say that the Commission was looking at how to resolve the situation with the Sudanese authorities. She added that it was too early to give any details. Kent Degerfelt told Reuters that he'd been in Sudan for five years and had always worked for the good of the country and its people and therefore had the impression that there was some kind of misunderstanding. Diplomatic sources in Khartoum said that the EU delegation and the Canadian diplomatic mission were dealing with human rights issues, leading to tense relation with the government (often criticised for its campaign of oppressing rebels in Darfur).
