Brussels, 22/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - According to a survey in the Daily Telegraph on Monday, the British prime minister, Gordon Brown, who is expected to meet the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, on Wednesday, could lose almost a quarter of Labour voters (24%) if it does not submit the “amending” treaty to a referendum. The survey reveals that in addition to this 82% of British people, 80% of Left voters want a referendum. In contrast to his predecessor, Tony Blair, who promised a referendum on the European Constitution, before its was reworded, Brown does not intend to submit the amending treaty to popular consultation in his country where public opinion is traditionally lukewarm about the European integration process. Brown is in favour of parliamentary ratification and believes that derogations obtained by London during the June European Council justify the abandonment of a referendum.
