Brussels, 31/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - Lech Kaczynski, the president of Poland, has said he is in favour of calling early legislative elections to prevent the country getting bogged down in a political crisis that is threatening the coalition in power. In an interview published on Tuesday 31 July by the Polish daily, Gazeta Wyborcza, Mr Kaczynski says the elections are “necessary” as “the coalition partners continue to exacerbate problems”. A ballot could be organised in September or November or in spring 2008, he went on to say, with preference for the latter date. The coalition headed by his twin brother, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is no longer certain of a majority in parliament since the ousting of the former agriculture minister, Andrzej Lepper, who was dismissed from government over a corruption scandal. His party, Samoobrona, which merged with the League of Polish Families to form the LiS, remained in government but is opposed to the formation of the Kaczynski brothers' Law and Justice Party (PiS), mainly over ratification of the future treaty of the European Union.
