Wolfgang Ischinger to represent EU in Kosovo talks

Brussels, 30/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana has decided to appoint Wolfgang Ischinger to represent the EU in future talks between Serbia and Kosovo on the status of Kosovo. The German diplomat, former German ambassador to Washington and currently the German ambassador to London, will join US and Russian representatives in talks on the status of what is currently a province of Serbia. The talks will be launched as soon as possible under the aegis of the contact group (see EUROPE 9477). Meeting in Vienna last week, the six members of the contact group (the United States, Russia, Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom) opted for a three-way supervision of the talks between Serbia and Kosovo. The duration of the talks has not yet been decided but the EU is hoping to meet the deadlines set out by the UN Security Council, in other words around 120 days. The US representative for Kosovo is diplomat Frank Wisner. Russia has yet to appoint its representative. (ab)
