Brussels, 19/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - The interior ministers of 14 EU member states are to meet in Bratislava on Friday and Saturday to discuss the next enlargement of the Schengen Area scheduled for 31 December 2007, the Slovakian interior minister, Robert Kalinak, pointed out on 17 July, as reported in CTK Daily News. Discussions will mainly be on the setting in place of the Schengen Information System (SISone4All) that most countries that entered the EU in 2004 must join if they wish to see effective lifting of border controls with the other member states. It would seem, however, that several countries do encounter problems about belonging to the system (EUROPE 9468). The ministers of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, which are all to enter the Schengen Area, as well as Austria, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland, will be invited to the meeting. Representatives of the European Commission and EU Council will also attend. The Schengen Area currently comprises 13 EU member states (of the former EU15 minus the United Kingdom and Ireland) and two countries outside the EU, Norway and Iceland. Mr Kalinak announced, moreover, that his country had fulfilled the main condition for entering the Schengen Area, namely that of making its 97 km common border with Ukraine secure. (bc)
