18/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - “D'Alema is right: the isolation of Hamas is fertile ground for extremism”, Vice-President of the European Parliament Luisa Morgantini (GUE-NGL, Italy), quoted by the Italian press agency Ansa, said on Wednesday. In yet another sign of a softening towards Hamas, Italian Foreign Affairs Minister Massimo d'Alema had declared, on Monday, at a meeting of his Democrats of the Left party (Democratici di Sinistra) that “it is in the interests of the international community to avoid pushing these movements into the arms of Al Qaeda”. In Ms Morgantini's view, “the EU and the international community have already committed an error in not recognising the government freely elected by the Palestinian people and again in not immediately recognising the national unity government (…)” between Fatah and Hamas.
