Parliament publishes 2008 timetable on Wednesday

Strasbourg, 10/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 11 July, the European Parliament will decide on its timetable for 2008. The main innovation, still uncertain at this stage, is the introduction of eight dates (23 January, 27 February, 26 March, 23 April, 28 May, 25 June, 10 September and 5 November) for holding meetings devoted to current events, in line with the decision of the Conference of Presidents on 28 September 2006. These 'mini-sessions' would take place on Wednesday, the same day the European Commission holds its weekly meetings in Brussels. The Conference of Presidents wants to have the option of confirming the holding of such meetings depending on what is happening in the world at large. In line with the Treaty, 12 plenary sessions are scheduled in Strasbourg (14-17 January, 18-21 February, 10-13 March, 14-17 April, 19-22 May, 16-19 June, 7-10 July, 1-4 September, 22-25 September, 20-23 October, 17-20 November and 15-18 December). The April plenary will have to be changed because the dates suggested by the Conference of Presidents are the same as those of the plenary session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly and could therefore lead to over-crowding on transport and accommodation services. Six 'mini-sessions' are scheduled in Brussels (30-31 January, 2-3 April, 7-8 May, 4-5 June, 8-9 October, 3-4 December). The deadline for lodging amendments to the timetable was 18: 00 on Tuesday afternoon. (oj)
