22/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - As the European Council was meeting, the European Network against Racism (ENAR) stressed in a press release that fundamental rights should be part of the future of the European Union. “We also urge for the full text of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights to be an integral part of the treaty,” said ENAR President Bashy Quraishy. He called on EU leaders to ensure that “a specific reference to the importance of the fight against racism and xenophobia as a core value and objective of the European Union is included in the treaty”. On Friday, the full inclusion of the Charter of Fundamental Rights in an “amending” treaty seemed unlikely in the light, especially, of opposition from the United Kingdom. (bc)
