THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/eu reform

04/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who will still be representing his country at the European Council on 21-22 June before leaving government, has restated his opposition to the creation of the post of European Foreign Minister, as foreseen in the Constitutional Treaty. The most important thing in the future EU treaty is that EU foreign policy should be accountable to the European Council, Blair said during an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung of 4 May. He did not believe anyone would want to transfer the tasks of the national foreign ministers to the European Union. The effectiveness of European foreign policy “is not a question of institutions”, he continued, saying it was clear that “on some matters, European countries will always have different opinions” as they are “independent and sovereign countries”. This should not necessarily be detrimental to the effectiveness of European foreign policy “as negotiations with Iran on the nuclear issue have shown”. Mr Blair also said that the British “do not have a problem with the double majority system” for qualified majority voting in Council. “It is obvious that Poland does have reserves. However, if we renegotiate on some of these issues, we shall have an enormous problem on our hands”, he warned. (hb)
