26/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - During Thursday's plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament reiterated its call on the EU and member states to immediately present a paper in favour of a universal moratorium on capital punishment before the United Nations General Assembly. Stressing that the declaration on capital punishment, put to the UN General Assembly by the EU on 19 December 2006, has already been signed by 88 countries, MEPs encourage the Union to “seize every opportunity to move forward”. Finally, Parliament calls on all European Union institutions, together with the Council of Europe, to support the World Day against the Death Penalty to be held every 10 October as of 2007. During February this year, the EP had already made a similar request to the EU Council Presidency (EUROPE 9357). (bc)
