Brussels, 26/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 24 April, the European Commission decided not to raise any objections to the contribution of the Dutch state to the Rotterdam Mainport Development Project. The project responds to the growing need for dock and port areas, and consists of the extension of the existing port area, the construction of a maritime access route and the development of a 750-hectare wildlife and recreational area.
That part of the expenditure which is described as state aid will be used for purposes that do not generate revenues. A further investment by the state and the port authority could generate a return, but market prices were paid, so this measure does not constitute state aid. The commission was, therefore, satisfied that no part of the project infringes Community law. (cd)
