MEPs condemn assassination of parliamentarians and call on authorities to step up fight against organised crime

Brussels, 16/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on Thursday by 57 votes in favour, 0 against and one abstention, the European Parliament condemned the assassination, on 19 February, of three members of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), the Salvadorians Eduardo Aubuisson, William Pichinte and Ramon Gonzalez Rivas, as well as their driver, as they were on their way to a meeting in parliament. MEPs call on Guatemala to “guarantee full independence, liberty and security to the Guatemalan judicial authorities in their investigation of these crimes” and, generally, to fight against impunity. The Guatemalan parliament should set up an international commission of inquiry against impunity in Guatemala and ratify the Statute on the International Criminal Court, they added, calling on the Commission to strengthen its cooperation with the country in order to promote rule of law, the fight against impunity and full respect of human rights.
