Brussels, 16/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is to set up a temporary committee to examine all aspects of climate change. The political decision was taken by the Conference of Presidents of the political groups in Strasbourg on 15 March, with the EPP-ED, PES, GUE and UEN groups voting in favour, the ALDE, Greens and IND/DEM groups abstaining and ITS voting against. The decision will be confirmed by a formal decision as soon as the committee's mandate is defined. The committee will have no legislative power. In a press release, the leader of the EPP-ED group, Joseph Daul, welcomed the initiative, and said, “We need to make an urgent response to the economic and social consequences of climate change. Our proposal is that the Committee reports back to Parliament in the next 12 months”. (an)
