THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/united states

16/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - As the German Presidency puts the finishing touches to the Berlin Declaration, the United States House of Representatives adopted its own two-page resolution on 13 March recognising the historic significance of the Treaty of Rome. The six-point resolution recognises the important role played by the EU in encouraging growth, development and prosperity in Europe, and in 'fostering the independence, democracy and economic development of the former Central European Communist states following the end of the Cold War.' The resolution 'acknowledges the vital role of the EU in the development of the close and mutually beneficial relationship that exists between the United States and Europe' and notes that 'there must be a renewed commitment to regular and intensive consultations between the US and the EU', agreeing to 'strengthen the transatlantic partnership by enhancing the dialogue and collaboration between the United States Congress and the European Parliament.'
