David Cameron says one must “forget” “dead” Constitution - Creation of new group at EP in 2009

Brussels, 07/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - According to David Cameron, leader of the British Conservatives and - according to current polls - likely to be the future British Prime Minister, the EU should focus on global warming, globalisation and poverty in the world rather than seek to revive its constitutional Treaty which is “dead” and that the EU27 would do better to “forget”. Speaking in Brussels on Tuesday, Cameron said there is no argument in favour of a European Constitution or a lightened Constitution. Instead of warming up the Constitution, which he believes is dead, the EU should act on global warming, poverty and globalisation, as these are the things that matter and on which the public expects results, he added. In the company of Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, Mr Cameron announced the creation, after the 2009 European elections, of a new political group in the European Parliament, the “Movement for European Reform”, which would include the Tories and the members of the ODS (Civic Democratic Party) that will together leave the EPP-ED Group.
