14/02/2007 (Agence Europe) -On Wednesday 14 February, the European Parliament approved, with some modification, the proposal updating Community conservation measures for certain stocks of highly migratory species (tuna, swordfish, see EUROPE 9151 for the proposal). The EP highlighted the urgent need for conservation measures for the bluefin tuna and to better combat illegal fishing, which was responsible for the current weakening in stocks of these highly migratory species.
