Brussels, 12/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - A message of support was sent out by the foreign affairs ministers of the EU to Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf, to encourage Somalia to move toward sustainable stability and reconciliation, on the basis of a comprehensive political process which is open to all parties and which involves all sectors of Somali society. Their conclusions, which were adopted in Brussels on 12 February, relayed this message. The Council of the EU welcomes the willingness stated by President Abdullahi Yussuf to launch a broad national process of inter-Somali dialogue, including all parties. The conclusions express the EU's hope “that this process will start as early as possible” and its willingness to “assist efforts to bring about genuine and credible dialogue for reconciliation”. Amongst other things, this assistance will go to the organisation of reconciliation conferences, and to supplying the resources necessary for the administrative and political institutions to function. The Council calls on the Somali government to lift the state of emergency as soon as possible. It welcomes the efforts made to create the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and stresses the EU's willingness to contribute to the funding of this mission via the African Peace Facility “as soon as the necessary requirements have been met”, particularly the adoption of a resolution of the UN Security Council. The EU will look into the possibility of providing logistical and technical support to AMISOM. (an)
