29/01/2007 (Agence Europe): The Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions in Europe (CRPM) has added its voice to calls in favour of the reinforcement and acceleration of the implementation of maritime safety rules. “The main reason for concern lies in the fact that there are not enough regulations in place concerning maritime transport safety, other than for the transport of hydrocarbons”, said the director in charge of the “Maritime Safety” branch of CRPM, François Desrentes, in a press release issued on Friday 26 January. Referring to the recent accident of the cargo ship MSC Napoli (which has been grounded off the southwest coast of England for several days, with a cargo of nearly 17000 tonnes of dangerous products), Mr Desrentes asked for the Commission, “which seems to be the most relevant and effective level to improve” the situation, to “take this opportunity to extend safety measures to all forms of maritime transport”.
