Brussels, 25/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission and Tunisia resumed their discussions on setting up a sub-committee on human rights, European sources say. The creation of the committee, in line with the commitment taken as part of the association agreement, was delayed because of the different views that had been expressed over the mission of such a committee, that the Tunisians see as an instrument for general political dialogue and the European side see as an appropriate framework for dealing with individual cases. The European Parliament is pressing the Commission to make this sub-committee a kind of observatory of the fate reserved for the opposition in Tunisia. The same differences were also noted on the Moroccan side and, according to the same European source, an agreement was reached at the end of December so that views exchanged in such a contest remain general and not geared to specific subjects. An agreement with Tunisia is said to be within reach and it is expected that talks will be formally concluded during the visit on 1 February by the Tunisian foreign minister. European sources say the Tunisian minister, Abdelwahab Abdallah, will meet External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and will be received by the president of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering.
