Brussels, 05/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Friday representatives from Member States highlighted the EU's commitment to a broad and inclusive process of reconciliation in Somalia (EUROPE 9336). The Political and Security Committee meeting in Brussels said that the provisional government of Abdullahi Yusuf should be expanded to include all political forces, civil society as moderate representatives of the Islamic courts, explained a diplomat. The priority should be stabilisation of the country, he confirmed, and underlined the need to take into account and encourage the announced withdrawal of Ethiopian forces, but avoid any security vacuum. An African force is therefore expected to take over, he added. The contact groups, meeting on the same day in Nairobi, highlighted that funding of the operation should be based on Resolution 1725 of the United Nations. Uganda announced that it would be sending troops to the mission. Rwanda, Tanzania, South Africa and Nigeria could also participate in the mission. The next meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers of the EU (22 January) will examine the situation in Somalia, particularly from a humanitarian point of view. (ab)
