04/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - Christine de Veyrac, French MEP (EPP-ED), welcomes the recent Commission proposal aimed at incorporating greenhouse gas emissions produced by civilian aircraft into the Community CO2 emissions trading scheme (EUROPE 9332). She states in a press release that the Commission's proposal is balanced. Air transport, she points out, is a fragile sector at the mercy of economic changes, and it is important to prevent it from being destabilised. It was therefore desirable for a period of adaptation to be fixed for implementation of reforms. Companies will normally have four years in which to prepare for this deadline. She said she welcomed the fact. “Airlines must now work internally to adjust during the four years available to them, so that the new environmental obligations that they have to comply with are not passed on to the passengers”, she added.
