Brussels, 13/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - COMECE, the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community, considers that the political “Declaration of Berlin” on the values and ambitions of Europe, which is to be adopted by the Member States, the European Commission and the European Parliament on 25 March 2007 in Berlin, should place the “human person at the heart of the European project”. Bishop Adrianus H. van Luyn, President of COMECE, has sent a contribution of the Member Bishops of COMECE entitled “Common values - the living source of the European project” to the leaders of the EU institutions, recalling that these common values must be “revived”. Given the new transnational challenges, COMECE supports the efforts being made to give the EU a political and legal framework adequate to its ambitions. The text has been forwarded to the president-in-office of the European Council, to his successor from 1 January 2007, Angela Merkel, and to the presidents of the Commission and the EP, as well as to Hans-Gert Pöttering, President of the EPP-ED Group.
