05/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, was in Sarajevo on Tuesday 5 December. During his stay there he attended the ceremony at Camp Butmir to mark the change of command of the EUFOR from Italian Major-General Gian Marco Chiarini to German Rear Admiral Hans-Jochen Witthauer. The 6,500-strong European force will be considerably scaled down in spring 2007 to around 700. The reduction of the European force dimension must be seen as “progress” in so far as it shows the improved level of security reached by the country, Javier Solana said, congratulating the EUFOR troops and the personnel of other Union-led missions (EUPM and EUMM). The High Representative above all welcomed the major work of disarmament achieved under General Chiarini's command. (oj)
