Brussels, 05/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs inaugurated the beginning of the Estlink service, an underwater electricity cable 150 kilometres long between Harku in Estonia and Espoo in Finland, that now links the electricity systems of the Baltic countries to the Scandinavian transmission networks. Until now, electricity networks in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were not connected to European networks. Estlink will therefore now ensure the electricity trade between Baltic countries and the rest of the Community market. Its completion was identified as a priority interconnection as part of the orientations included in the Trans-European Energy Networks, TEN-E. (eh)
