Commission sanctions countries which have not recovered irregular expenditure

Brussels, 05/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 5 October, the European Commission decided to call on five EU Member States (Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, France and Germany) to pay back a total of €317.3 million from the Community agriculture fund. These countries have been sanctioned because they failed to take the necessary measures to recover unduly paid amounts under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), dating from before 1st January 1999.
