Brussels, 14/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - In spring 2007, the European Commission intends to launch work on Passenger Name Records (PNR) in Europe, announced Franco Frattini, Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Safety. “We shall be presenting a feasibility study next spring”, Frattini said, adding that, in time, he envisaged presenting a proposal for a directive along those lines. In his view, “profiling” should be seen as an advantage, even if it is voluntary or positive, as it will help travellers save time at borders. He also explained that giving people the possibility to record their data on a voluntary base would help them reduce the number of controls they would be subject to and would even reduce the risk of their being subject to ethnic profiling.
