Endorsement of directive on duty-free allowances

Strasbourg, 11/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 5 September, MEPs adopted a consultation report by Giuseppe Gargani (EPP-ED, Italy) on the draft directive on the duty-free tax regime for the import of non-commercial goods (goods without commercial value) from outside the EU (see EUROPE No. 9140). The directive aims to change the tax thresholds for goods carried in the personal luggage of travellers entering the European Union. The Commission suggests making a distinction between travellers entering the EU by air and those entering by land or sea. The current threshold of 175 euros would be raised to 500 euros for air passengers and 220 euros for air and sea passengers The draft directive boosts the upper limits for alcoholic drinks and scraps limits on coffee, tea and perfume. It suggests an upper limit of sixteen litres of beer per traveller, and doubling the wine limit from two to four litres.
