Proposal to amend current fishing quotas

Brussels, 30/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 24 August, the European Commission adopted a proposal to amend certain fishing quotas for the current year. Member States are called on to adopt quickly the following changes to the regulations of December 2005 on total allowable catches (TAC) and quotas for 2006: - a prohibition to fish for basking shark and white shark in all waters (taking account of international obligations deriving from FAO decisions); - implementation of the agreement of 20 February 2006 between the Community and Iceland, particularly on quotas allocated to Community vessels for redfish in the Icelandic Economic Zone (3000 tonnes (t), 1690t of which are for Germany and 1160t for the United Kingdom); - revision of the presentation of the use of certain types of fishing gear that can be used without special conditions by vessels operating in waters covered by recovery plans for certain stocks; - an increase in the number of days at sea authorised for vessels which elect to use more selective gear in the North Sea; - an allocation to Poland of a herring quota in certain zones (in line with Annex XII of the Accession Treaty) and fishing licences for saithe and cod in Norwegian waters; - fishery for roundnose grenadier limited to 2761t (2612t for Denmark) in Zone III (Baltic Sea and Danish waters) following consultations between the Community and Norway on 31 January 2006.
