25/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - Following news of the death of student activist Akbar Mohammadi, who had been serving a fifteen-year prison sentence in Evin prison in Teheran, allegedly as the result of a hunger strike, the Finnish Presidency has called for an independent investigation and questions whether Mr Mohammadi was given appropriate medical care while on hunger strike. In a statement issued on 24 August on behalf of the EU, the Finnish Presidency says 'the European Union expresses grave concern regarding the harsh treatment of dissidents, opposition leaders, student activists and all human rights defenders in Iranian prisons.'
