25/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, Luxembourg MEP Astrid Lulling (EPP-ED) states that opinion is still strongly divided over using pieces of oak in wine-making and calls for a solution to be found as part of the reform of the EU's wine-making industry. She explains that EU Commissioner Mariann Fischer-Boel has written to her to point out that the Council of the EU adopted a regulation on 20 December 2005 authorising the use of pieces of oak in wine-making, and that when it established criteria for the use of oak wood in April 2006, the European Commission had foreseen labelling rules to avoid any confusion among consumers. But Astrid Lulling comments that some wine-makers have been waiting for ten years to be allowed to use oak, while others see this as an attack on traditional wine-making and are concerned about the danger of horrendous duping of consumers.
