03/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - In Kinshasa, the small group headed by French General Pierre-Michel Joana has been successful in building up the Congolese armed forces, with a number of concrete albeit fragile results. The European assistance mission for reform of the security sector hopes to move on to the phase of rebuilding the Congolese army after the elections (see related article in EUROPE 9243 and 9245). EUSEC is composed of 32 persons from nine Member States (Belgium, France, UK, Sweden, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Hungary). Eighty-percent of this civilian mission, which is normally to expire on 30 June 2007, is made up of military, about ten of whom are in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was created to help the Congolese authorities put together an army from the various militia from the UPC, MLC, DRC-Goma, Mai-Mai and the remainder of the Congolese army, as well as from the auto-protection forces which have not yet agreed to the integration process (for more detail, see Atlantic News).
