THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) lebanon/council of europe

01/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Russian Presidency of the Council of Europe deplores the deaths of civilians caused by Israeli attacks in Lebanon, and in particular in Qana, says Russian foreign minister and President of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers Sergei Lavrov in a statement. He condemns the flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, and human rights, including the most important, “the right to life”. The Council of Europe has always stated that there must be strict compliance with international law and human rights' standards in the fight against international terrorism, the minister points out, fearing that the latest tragic developments in the Middle East will provoke extremism and intolerance, thereby making the dialogue, that is so badly needed, that much more complicated.
