New measures to combat salmonella

Brussels, 01/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 1 August, the Commission adopted two regulations to combat salmonella (one of the most widespread diseases with its origin in the food we eat, as Commissioner Kyprianou warns). These measures are: - a regulation laying down targets for the reduction of salmonella in laying hens (Member States should present national programmes early 2007); - a regulation setting out the rules on the methods used to control salmonella in poultry, including mandatory vaccination from 2008 onwards for laying hens in Member States with a salmonella prevalence of 10% or more; - and examination of the possibility of introducing a trade ban on eggs from salmonella infected flocks as soon as possible (national experts will be discussing this in the autumn).
