Brussels, 20/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - Accompanied by a delegation of presidents of farmers' organisations from Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland and the United Kingdom, the presidents of the Committee of EU Professional Agricultural Organisations (COPA) and the General Committee for Agricultural Cooperation in the EU (COGECA) met trade commissioner Peter Mandelson on Wednesday to ask him to make no more concessions at the WTO. COPA and CoGECA expressed their “strong concerns” over the conditional flexibility promised by Mr Mandelson to his partners in Geneva in June which seeks to bring the Community offer more into line with the demands of the G20. Accepting the G20 proposal “would be a disaster for European farmers: the European meat sector would collapse and cereals, dairy, sugar, fruits and vegetables would also be severely hit. Overall farm income in the EU25 would fall by a quarter and over a million jobs would be lost,” stressed a joint press release, emphasising that the conclusions were based on figures from DG Agriculture at the Commission.
