20/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - “Slowly but surely”, Poland is moving “towards the same level of respect for fundamental rights and human rights as Turkey,” says CSU MEP Markus Ferber in a press release. He was attacking the “hysterical” reaction of the Kaczynski twins (the Polish President and Prime Minister) to an article “The New Potato”, which appeared in a German newspaper Die Tagezeitung (known as taz), satirising them. Not content with cancelling a Summit at Weimar with Angela Merkel and Jacques Chirac, the Polish President now wants to pursue the disrespectful journalist through a European arrest warrant, says an astonished Mr Ferber. He is also indignant that the press close to the twins has published a list of accredited German journalists in Poland “complete with names and telephone numbers”. The Polish Opposition has strongly criticised this attitude, as have several former Polish foreign ministers in an open letter.
