THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution/jef

21/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Jean Seifert, President of the Young European Federalists (JEF), and Alexander Hoefmans, President of JEF-Belgium, say in a press release that there is still “wide support” for the” Constitutional Treaty, but that certain dispositions in parts three and four which “are not constitutional” would have to be amended. JEF proposes a three-step plan: - the Parliament, Commission and Council draw up a roadmap until 2009, by which date a final settlement should be presented; - a new Convention should be called up to look at the “controversial” parts three and four, with these two amended sections being attached to the European Constitution “with a lighter revision mechanism”; - a European referendum should be called to run alongside the 2009 European elections.
